Let’s come straight to your question. Although it depends on various factors but generally ice cream freezes in 3 to 4 hours. If the quantity of ice cream mixture is more then it takes 5 to 6 hours to freeze.
But, generally, I prefer to freeze it for 12 to 15 hours. I prefer a glass bowl as a container but you can take a steel bowl to reduce freezing time.

- Ice cream mixture.
- Hand mixture.
- Freezer and mixture-safe bowl.
How To Prepare Ice Cream Mixture?
Vanilla flavored custard-style ice cream is the first choice for many. In fact, this is my favorite ice cream. If you also love this then let’s make it at home.
You need the following ingredients to make a vanilla-flavored ice cream mixture-
- 2 cups of milk.
- 1 cup sugar.
- 1/4 tablespoon rock salt.
- 4 cups of chilled whipping cream.
- 6 beaten egg yolks.
- 2 tablespoon of vanilla extract.

Step #1- Heat The Milk
Put the milk in a saucepan and heat it on the stove. Bring it to a simmer using a medium flame. If you have a food thermometer then measure the temperature and make sure to heat it up to 175-degrees Fahrenheit. Now stop the flame and take it off the stove.
Step #2- Combine These Ingredients
Take another bowl and add salt, egg yolks, and sugar. Using a hand mixer or whisk and beat it for three to four minutes until it gets a sticky texture.
To test it, take a spatula and dip it inside the mixture. Take it out of the mixture and notice if it makes a ribbon-like texture before falling.
Step #3- Add Milk
Now it’s time to add milk gradually to the mixture. Also using hand mixture keep beating at low speed while adding the scalded milk.
Gradual mixing will prevent the hot milk to cook the egg yolk. Now put it back on the stove and cook the custard mixture. You can use a food thermometer to measure the temperature of the mixture. It should reach 180-degree Fahrenheit.
Step #4- Cooling The Mixture
Take the saucepan off from the heat and cool it. Once it reaches room temperature, put it in your ice water bath. Now add vanilla extract and cream then mix them thoroughly.
Step #5- Freezing The Ice Cream
Now it’s time to freeze the ice cream. Put the ice cream mixture in a bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Make sure the plastic wrap touches the upper layer of custard in the bowl. It prevents forming a slimy film.
Now freeze the ice cream for 12-15 hours for better taste. If you can’t wait so long, then wait for at least 5 to 6 hours.
